Los Angeles Opera: El Ultimo Sueno De Frida Y Diego
Los Angeles Opera’s El Ultimo Sueno De Frida Y Diego, directed by Juergen Flimm, is a love story between the world-renowned Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The production will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles.
This will be the first time Los Angeles Opera has performed the work, which had its world premiere at the Berlin State Opera in 2010. The music is by Mexican composer Daniel Catan, with a libretto by Marcela Fuentes-Beraines.
The story is based on the true events surrounding the final months of Kahlo’s life, when she and Rivera were living in Mexico City. Rivera was an important figure in the Mexican Revolution and a leading member of the Communist Party. Kahlo was a celebrated artist in her own right, and the two were married for many years.
Their relationship was tumultuous, and they divorced and remarried several times. In the end, Kahlo was dying of cancer, and Rivera was by her side. The opera tells their story through a series of flashbacks, as Kahlo lies in her hospital bed dreaming of their life together.
