Los Angeles Opera: Lucia Di Lammermoor
Los Angeles Opera: Lucia Di Lammermoor is a tragic opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. The libretto was written by Salvadore Cammarano, based on Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor.
The opera tells the story of Lucia, a young woman who is forced by her tyrannical brother Enrico into a marriage with the wealthy but brutal nobleman, Arturo Bucklaw. Lucia falls in love with the young captain Edgardo Ravenswood, and the two plan to elope. However, on the night of their escape, Enrico intercepts a letter from Edgardo to Lucia and manipulates events so that it appears that Edgardo has dishonored Lucia. Enraged, Lucia stabs Arturo to death on their wedding night. Edgardo arrives too late to stop the bloodshed, and learning of Lucia’s apparent betrayal, curses her before dying in a duel with Enrico. Lucia is driven insane by the events of the night and dies in Edgardo’s arms.
The opera will be performed in Italian with English supertitles.
Running time is approximately three hours.
