Los Angeles Opera: Tosca
Tosca is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on 14 January 1900. The work, based on Victorien Sardou’s 1887 French-language drama La Tosca, is a melodramatic piece set in Rome in June 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples’ control of Rome threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy.
It was Puccini’s penultimate opera, after La fanciulla del West and Turandot.
Tosca tells the story of an artist, Mario Cavaradossi, his lover, the singer Floria Tosca, and the evil police chief Baron Scarpia, who lusts after Tosca and will stop at nothing to possess her.
The opera is full of intense drama and features some of Puccini’s most beautiful music, including the arias “Recondita armonia” and “Vissi d’arte” as well as the famous “Te Deum” at the end of Act II.
