Los Angeles Opera: Turandot
Turandot is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, completed by Franco Alfano, and set to a libretto in Italian by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The story is based on Turandot, a play by Carlo Gozzi, and its origins can be traced back to a Chinese story from the 4th century BC. It tells of the princess Turandot, who has a suitors killed if they fail to answer her three riddles, and Calaf, who falls in love with her and risks his life to win her hand.
The opera was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 25 April 1926, conducted by Arturo Toscanini. This production was Puccini’s last opera; he died before it was finished, and Alfano completed the work.
Turandot is one of the most frequently performed operas, and is popular with audiences worldwide. It has been recorded many times, and there have been several notable stage productions, including a controversial one by Franco Zeffirelli.
The opera will be performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Saturday June 8th, 2024. The Pavilion is one of the largest performing arts venues
